Louw Pretorius was born in South Africa in 1932 and started painting while still at school. He studied at intervals with a number of leading bona vide artists in the fields of painting, sculpture and printmaking.

The way in which he combines paintings of the South- and the Southern African landscape with writing in the form of essays, sketches of poetry is quite interesting: The one is never meant to elucidate of interpret the other – both are manifestations of the same idea; strengthening the spiritual substructure which cradles his artistic experience – thoughts in form, colour, texture, line – and words.
