Aan die noord-wes soom
van die Kamdeboo
êrens in die Hartland-Karoo
staan gestapelde wagte
in gelid teen die hang
van 'n bar ravyn
aan’t waak teen die bang
van donkermaan nagte...
in winterkou én koel somer’s dou!
Die Kamdeboo se beeldetuin
in die skoot van vergetelheid?
Dalk net altare van gebondenheid -
neffens Spandoukop se kruin?
This composition is based on the contrasting
disposition of a Karoo landscape embodied in characteristic opposites for example sweeping vastness versus eminent and clear guide-posts. These contrasts are enhanced by a natural interlaced flow between the three horizontal planes. (Experience this for yourself by amongst others, simply cover any two of the three horizontal planes on your computer screen with a strip of paper and take note of the specific ‘feeling’ revealed by the open section – each in its own way.)
Strong slanting lines are kept in die picture frame by a gigantic ‘ladle’ of solid rock scooping up a cluster of cairns – precariously balanced pillars of volcanic rock that tower up to 120 metres high. The focal point ‘koppie’ or “Spandaukop” [1 400 metre or 4 593 foot] is a feature that can be described as the trade mark of the Heartland-Karoo. The late afternoon sun spreads a peaceful mood that ties all the elements into an enforceable unity.
